Film Events in Vancouver Done Right

Film events in Vancouver are popping up everywhere. There’s something magical going on!

There’s Something Magical Going on! Film events in Vancouver are all about great coverage.

Filming events is all about coverage. You throw into the mix, do some attractive camera moves, polish up your edit with some energetic music, and attractive color correction, and you pretty much have an amazing piece!

Problems that beset film events production in Vancouver

The biggest problem people have with event video coverage is not getting the right footage. This simple element will have your video producer, cinematographer, videographer or camera operator running around the entire time capturing everything and anything that happens.

The second biggest problem is not focusing on people. Nobody connects well with inanimate objects! Although they can be included, any great event video is going to be all about the people and their activities.

Capturing good-looking people having fun is the foundation of filming any great event video. Sometimes we get lost in the details of production and focus on the expensive catering, beautiful flowers, or amazing wallcoverings. But nobody can resist good-looking people smiling and having fun.

The next biggest problem I’ve seen with event videos is simply not incorporating high-quality equipment. It’s surprising that equipment prices have come down by more than half. What once was a hundred-thousand-dollar video camera is now less than $10,000 with all the extras and even some batteries and media cards.

Combine a great camera with a few simple moves such as pushes and pulls, slides and moves then add in a few gimbal moves and maybe an introductory drone shot and you have some cinematic gold.

Filming events is also about the presentation because you need to dress up for the occasion and blend in with your human surroundings. There’s something about a 14-year-old-boy holding a video camera which will make anyone nervous.

Making your subject matter feel comfortable and excited to be on camera is a huge feat. One of my biggest achievements as a director is taking normal people and helping them feel calm, comfortable and even honored to be in front of the camera.

If you want great coverage, hire only the pros like Red+Ripley

Our company has been producing event videos for nearly 10 years. The amount and volume of great productions we’ve made has come from hundreds of companies we’ve worked with. We rarely cover weddings but love filming any events in Vancouver and for pretty much any genre you can think up.

Some of the most crucial elements to cover in any event include:

  • Good-looking happy people having fun
  • Exciting events or engaging activities which draw the eye
  • Beautiful details caught with a cinematic eye
  • Slides, pans, tilts, pushes and pulls nice and smooth
  • Drone establishing shots to show the location

Filming an event can often be done in half a day. Often, a couple of hours of focused effort from a video producer will create some great works of art.

When we are filming events in Vancouver, we get more involved, and sometimes production lengths can be up to 10 or 12 hours.

People are often surprised that 10 or 12 hours of filming can be cut down to just 30 seconds. But God, it is gold!

When you have tons of shots with a whole lot of variety, it’s easy to cut out everything but retain the absolute best shots to have a highly-polished production.

This is exactly how the pros do it. They carefully color correct only the best shots which were captured over tens or hundreds of hours of production in order to perfectly combine into only the best selects.

I continue to be surprised at how involved we can get when filming events because often, clients have an eye for polished detail and high-quality productions which really draw attention. We love the idea of capturing beautiful images that really get everyone excited.

Have you ever seen an event video that you absolutely loved? This is what we call a reference so make sure to save it. Having a great video reference helps us determine what kind of shots, sounds, and images you are looking for.

Our company owns $150,000 in production equipment that includes cameras, lights, and computers. We can go on location to capture an event and even edit for same-day delivery.

Why using the right tools and equipment matters in filming events

The main purpose of using a great camera is to have clarity of the image. It’s just simply seeing the image clearly when filming events.

Equally important is the mastery of a lot of camera moves to emphasize the subject matter. Movement can increase a parallax effect which draws out the features of any object by giving it a more three-dimensional effect.

Aside from the camera, it’s also a must to use high-quality audio equipment to have clarity of audio or clearly hearing anything recorded when filming the event.

But of course, these tools and equipment would be nothing without the ever-reliable editor whose presence is vital to the whole production. It’s the editor who draws out the story and creates a powerful narrative that speaks to your target viewer.
