Video Editing, the challenging task of crafting a powerful narrative using digital linear editing!
Video Editing, it is the challenging task of crafting powerful narrative using digital linear editing! For us as a video editor in Vancouver we make the most out of it.
The foundation and most important part of editorial is about the technical skills. The non-linear video editing and production is the foundation of all narrative storytelling.
Traditionally, the production workflow is divided into the following phases; development, pre-production, production and post-production. Each one of these phases have multiple steps with a variety of people and companies involved in doing it.

We’ve been editing for many years and produce more than 100 productions yearly, for nearly a decade. We hired video editors, worked with film companies in Vancouver and we even produced training workflows.
Even in Hollywood films, the largest commercials, favorite documentary shows or on any video production company needs to master the foundations of editorial technical skills.
Strong Foundation of being a Video Editor Vancouver
From this strong foundation, comes the start of an artistic and creative process. Like a painter who knows his tools and mediums, a video editor involves more on the part of the process, which is wrapped in the variation of communication and its story.

In our process, we do a detailed ‘production book document’- with all the planning, so that we can handle production and get all of the deliverable into the editorial. This includes graphics, Red digital cinema footage, effects, titles and even an editing script.
I always want our editors to start with all the tools needed, both in terms of training and knowledge. So we produced our own editing training program.
Being on set as an editor, helps speeding up editing because you become familiar with the production process. But unless there is an opportunity for the editor to help out and become useful while shooting.
The Video Editor’s Workflow
The real challenge of being an editor is performing video editing and production. Understanding the vision it projects and arranging the footage. Finally, to fully realize the outcomes of the video editing production in which will both satisfy the client as well as the vision. This is always more challenging than expected.

- All video editors get excited about the effects, cool shots and cool graphics with eye-catching styling.
- We really calm our editors down and get them to focus first on the story. We call this the Narrative Phase.
- Sometimes I’ll listen to commercial video production and edits using only the sound. This helps me really get a sense for the story before providing feedback.
- After completing the narrative phase we move into the Rough phase.
Clients are always stressed about delivery because sometimes the visuals can be rough, editions could be imperfect. We avoid any polishing elements such as graphics, effects, color correction, titles, motion graphics, visual effects or anything that masks or distracts from the story.

In video production editing, we deliver several rounds of cuts. The first round is the Rough, then comes the Fine and then the Final.
